| Oncology- For oncology, P.E.T. provides vital diagnostic information that can alter the course of cancer treatment and lessen the chance of unwarranted surgery. P.E.T. provides critical information non-invasively about whether a tumor is benign or malignant; whether the cancer has metastasized; monitoring of cancer recurrences vs. scarring; and monitoring the effectiveness of treatment. No other imaging modality has comparable potential, because P.E.T. has the unique ability to image tumor metabolic activity, in vivo. P.E.T.'s ability to image tumor metabolic activity non-invasively is important, because most malignant tumors exhibit a high glucose metabolic activity. Neurology- P.E.T. provides the most accurate information to localize tumors of the brain and aid in the diagnosis of complex dementia disorders, including Alzheimer's disease. Cardiology- P.E.T. scans are most effective when the patient has had an inconclusive nuclear medicine stress test. P.E.T. can measure myocardial viability and the extent of cardiac muscle damage. |
